Sustainable Agriculture Community Loses a Key Regional Leader
On Thursday November 15th, Andy Hankins, Extension Specialist at Virginia State University, died suddenly of a heart attack. For the past twelve years, Andy has coordinated the annual Virginia Sustainable Agriculture Conference, held jointly by Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Association for Biological Farming. He will be widely remembered and honored for all of his dedication to helping farmers launch enterprises in organic or sustainable production and marketing of specialty crops from seedless watermelons and cut flowers to American ginseng and high-tunnel ginger production; as well as his active role in VABF research projects in organic production of winter and summer squash. His dedication to helping small scale, minority, and limited-resource farmers found expression in his day to day work with these producers, as well as in launching the annual Small Farm Family Conference and holding numerous workshops throughout Virginia.
Andy will be sorely missed throughout the farming community in our region.
