VABF is partnering with Twin Oaks Seed Farm for the following event:
Twin Oaks Cucurbit Trials Field Day
4-7 pm on Monday September 15th

at Twin Oaks Seed Farm in Louisa, Virginia

Twin Oaks Seed Farm, managed by Edmund Frost, produces organic vegetable seed crops and some produce on five acres in Louisa County. In 2014 we received a SARE grant for variety trials of melon, cucumber and winter squash, with a focus on evaluating Downy Mildew resistance. This field day is oriented towards commercial growers, but all gardeners (and especially seed savers) are welcome to attend. There is no charge for this event.

We’ll start with a short presentation about the project. Then we’ll go into the field to look at the 120+ cucumber, melon and winter squash seedstocks entered in the trial. We’ll discuss the merits of the standouts in terms of Downy Mildew resistance, productivity, eating quality and marketability. There will also be a variety tasting. Printouts will be available, with information from early results.

Directions: From I-64, take exit 148 and head north on 605 (Shannon Hill Road) for 3.6 miles. Make a sharp right onto E. Old Mountain Road, and go approximately 1 mile. There will be a sign for Cucurbit Trials Field Day on the right (if you reach Bakers Branch Lane you’ve gone too far).Turn on the dirt farm road at the sign and follow signs to the back field with the trials.
