Proposals are being accepted below for both:
·· Pre-Conference Workshops - Half & Full Day Intensives on Friday, 1/10/25
·· Conference Sessions - 90 Minute Sessions on Saturday, 1/11, and Sunday, 1/12/25

Veterans! Interested in a free week-long agriculture training with classroom and hands-on farm tours? Apply to participate in the NCAT Armed to Farm August training in Harrisonburg, VA!

* Registration closes Friday, 7/12/24 *

Armed to Farm trainings include an engaging blend of farm tours, hands-on activities, and interactive classroom instruction. NCAT Sustainable Agriculture specialists will lead the training sessions. Additional contributors will include staff from USDA agencies plus experienced crop and livestock producers.

This training is for veterans in the Mid-Atlantic region, with priority given to Virginia residents. The number of participants will be limited. One spouse or farm partner is welcome to attend with a veteran but must submit a separate application.

The application is due by July 12. Applicants will be notified by July 19 whether or not they were selected to attend the training.

--Dates, Location, and Cost
Armed to Farm will take place August 12-16 in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Participants will attend classroom sessions and travel to local farms for hands-on learning experiences.

The event is free for those chosen to attend; lodging at the Hotel Madison, transportation to local farms, and most meals will be provided. Information on travel reimbursements will be provided upon acceptance to the training.

Climate-Smart Field Day Events offer educational opportunities for farmers enrolled in the Southern Piedmont Climate-Smart Project and anyone interesting in learning climate-smart farming practices such as roller crimping, plasticulture and more.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with Southern Piedmont Climate-Smart Project team members, take a field tour, learn more about the project, and more.

Attendance is free and registration is required. Lunch is provided for all attendees.

Applications are still open! Vegetable Farmers & Farmers Market Managers in the Southern Piedmont, join us in growing climate-smart commodities on 1–10 acres of land for four consecutive years to support the Southern Piedmont Climate-Smart Project. Open to both conventional & organic farmers!

Led by Rodale Institute and funded by the USDA, the Climate-Smart project is partnering with universities, NGOs, farmers, and farmers markets in the Southeastern U.S. to the environmental and socio-economic benefits of cover crop termination and planting into residue vs. plasticulture. Participating farms will receive cash incentives, as well as a variety of non-cash incentives such as equipment, technical support, and seed.

Farmer Project Requirements:
· Follow the planting and cover cropping rotation provided
· Provide data via phone application

Market Manager Project Requirements:
· Fill out an application that provides analytics and graphics related to market metrics

On May 15th, 2024, we were fortunate to have world

On May 15th, 2024, we were fortunate to have world-renowned soil microbiologist Dr. Elaine Ingham of the Soil Food visit us at Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) in Roanoke, Virginia, for a full-day workshop on all things soil health!

Workshop highlights included a group-built compost pile, learning about national Soil Food Web projects and spending the afternoon in the STEM lab at VWCC identifying soil microbes that are crucial to nutrient density and healthy food production. The group also learned from experts from LW Scientific on what scopes are best for this type of work and from Hiawassee Products on the different types of equipment that can be used by farmers and gardeners to make their compost go further to benefit crops and soils, like bio-extractors and vermicomposting bins.

We want to extend a very special thank you to Farm Credit of Virginia for their sponsorship and support (thanks Allie!) and to Amy, Heather and Mallory for allowing us to use the facilities at VWCC for this great event!

Meet VABF's New President!

"Hi there! I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Seyra Whitney and I am the new President of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Association for Biological Farming. I am proud and excited for this journey and I hope to meet many of you along the way. I currently farm for a nonprofit in Powhatan, VA. We are a vegetable production farm that is Certified Naturally Grown and we distribute to the larger Richmond region. I have been farming for about 10 years and enjoy all the challenges and problem solving that it entails. To me farming is a way to engage with the community by feeding and growing with people around you. I have held leadership roles within the outdoor world, the USDA, and in the organization of Shalom Farms and hope to extend this expertise throughout VABF. My passion for sustainable agriculture will create a collective steering of the organization to greater heights, promoting and advocating for policies that support small scale farmers. As we undergo our Strategic Planning Initiative, I hope to provide a solid base from which we can grow into our roots and then be a resource for Virginia farmers in the way that they need and foster community engagement within the agriculture space. Please reach out for anything and I hope to engage with you soon."

Becoming a Certified Organic farm is a significant commitment, but it can have tremendous advantages, from increased market competitiveness and improved recordkeeping to accessing additional funding and technical assistance from service providers.

Join us for a discussion on Demystifying Organic and have a chance to network with organic farmers & certifiers who can answer questions and provide resources for your journey through transition to organic production.

All-Farm Organics has been an organically certified small scale field crop producer for twenty years. Starting with open pollinated heritage popcorn for seed contracts and bulk compost for sale to gardeners, it has expanded into other heritage corn and small grains, both for seed and for milling. The emphasis has been on creating soil health through intensive mixed multi-species cover cropping.

🌱 Seeking commercial vegetable farmers in the p

🌱 Seeking commercial vegetable farmers in the piedmont region of Virginia!

Cover cropping in the off-season is a powerful tool for vegetable farmers to help build soil health, cycle carbon and nutrients and successfully maintain a no-till growing system, and advances in simple farm technology can allow farmers to experiment with new ways to capitalize using cover crops. Covers can be planted using a no-till drill in fall, roller-crimpers are used to terminate the cover crop in spring, and plastic mulch can be laid right on the mat of carbon that was rolled-crimped and planted into, achieving multiple benefits for the soil microbiome and spring cash crops alike.

We are working directly with the Rodale Institute and partners at Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA), Georgia Organics (GO) and several university research teams to quantify the benefit of cover cropping on commercial vegetable fields. From soil health metrics like aggregate stability and soil respiration to potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, our research and technical assistance teams will work directly with participating farmers to support the implementation of cover cropping and ensure that farmers are successful not just within the bounds of this project, but to build on their experience and expand the use of cover cropping across all of their farmed acreage.

This is an outstanding opportunity to learn directly from Dr. Elaine Ingham, widely recognized as the world’s foremost soil biologist.

In the morning session, participants will be making an active compost pile with Dr. Ingham and discussing the important details of making good compost, so dress accordingly!

In the afternoon we will go into the microscopy lab and participants will have the opportunity to observe and identify soil and compost microbes that are crucial to food production, guided by Dr. Ingham and the Soil Food Web staff.
