On May 15th, 2024, we were fortunate to have world-renowned soil microbiologist Dr. Elaine Ingham of the Soil Food visit us at Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) in Roanoke, Virginia, for a full-day workshop on all things soil health! Workshop highlights included a group-built compost pile, learning about national Soil Food Web projects and spending the afternoon in the STEM lab at VWCC identifying soil microbes that are crucial to nutrient density and healthy food production. The group also learned from experts from LW Scientific on what scopes are best for this type of work and from Hiawassee Products on the different types of equipment that can be used by farmers and gardeners to make their compost go further to benefit crops and soils, like bio-extractors and vermicomposting bins.
